s14.de is a magazine and archive for classic BMW — every model line before the F and G generations, set in context by people who have driven and worked on these cars for decades. A curated marketplace will follow. Our motive is simple: preserve knowledge, place it accurately, stay honest.
Why s14.de?
The S14 is a four-cylinder. 2.3 litres, four valves per cylinder, from 1986 in the legendary BMW M3 of the E30 series. Its block comes from the M10 of the 02 models, its cylinder head layout from the M88 — the six-cylinder of the motorsport icon BMW M1. An engine, then, in which everyday engineering and racing are quite literally bolted together.
That is exactly what we mean by the name. The E-series were the era in which production cars and motorsport sat close together and every model had a character of its own — not because anyone had decided that as a brand value, but because engineers solved things their own way.
That is what we write about here: the history, engineering, development and character of the classic BMW E-series. With evidence where evidence exists — and with a note where we are not certain.
Why we exist
It all began in 2001 with s14motorsport.de — the first German community around the M3 E30. From that time comes the insight this project rests on: the knowledge about these cars sits in people’s heads, in folders and in forums, and it disappears more quietly than you would think. Magazines go out of print, discussion threads go offline, workshop knowledge retires. s14.de is an attempt to bring that knowledge to one place where it stays.
The second reason is the market. Anyone offering a classic today ends up on platforms built for everything — from city cars to ex-lease returns — and which have become remarkably expensive for commercial sellers: a handful of cars costs three figures a month, without a thirty-year-old six-cylinder being presented any better than an everyday car. A classic does not need a filter list, it needs context: condition, history, originality, evidence.
That this works has been demonstrated in the Porsche world for years. There, a marketplace has established itself that curates rather than lists — and that is precisely where its value lies. For classic BMW, that counterpart is still missing.
This is why s14.de grows in this order: the archive first, then the marketplace. Anyone who wants to sell these cars must first be able to understand them.

Accuracy & sources
Every statement carries a source and a status: verified or unverified. What we cannot document, we mark as “source needed” — rather than selling it as fact.
Knowledge grows together
Like any good reference work, this archive lives on corrections. Anyone who finds an error, contributes a source or closes a gap improves the entry for everyone — and every change stays traceable.
Images with provenance
Every image is labelled: our own photograph, licensed material or illustration. With rare cars in particular, a labelled illustration is more honest than no image at all — but it never counts as evidence.
The editorial team
Who is behind it
Behind s14.de is a small editorial team of enthusiasts — deliberately without a cult of personality. What counts is documented information, not names beneath author photographs. Whoever wrote an article is named on it; beyond that we work as an editorial team.

Maintains model pages, data sheets and the technical classification of the E-series — including source checking and confidence labelling.
Guest authors
Specialist knowledge of individual model lines, tuners and racing series — from people who lived through or researched an era themselves. Articles appear under their name.
Workshop & specialist partners
Check technical data against practice: what holds on the dynamometer and on the lift decides against the data sheet in case of doubt.
The community
