The model line that made the 3 Series grow up
In August 1990 the E36 went into production and replaced the E30. The leap was bigger than at any generation change before: a wedge-shaped front with twin headlights under a shared glass cover, a significantly longer wheelbase, noticeably more room in the rear — and above all a new rear axle.
The central control arm axle, originally developed for the Z1, appeared for the first time in large-scale production with the E36. Under lateral force it generates toe-in at the outer wheel in a corner, taking away the load-change behaviour the E30 was notorious for. Only the Compact and Z3 retained the old semi-trailing arm axle.
The E36 was also the model line of firsts: 1992 VANOS in the M3 and the six-cylinder coupés, 1994 the first four-cylinder diesel in a 3 Series with the 318tds, 1995 the first six-cylinders with an aluminium crankcase, and from late 1995 the M3 3.2 as the first BMW vehicle with double VANOS and the first six-speed gearbox in a 3 Series. In the end seven body styles were on offer — more than ever before or since.
02 · History
Ten years in ten steps
From the sedan in summer 1990 to the Compact, which continued until September 2000.
- 1990 Production of the sedan begins in August, unveiling in November. Launch line-up 316i, 318i with the M40, plus 320i and 325i with the new four-valve six-cylinder M50.
- 1990 Technical first: the central control arm rear axle developed for the Z1 appears for the first time in large-scale production, replacing the E30's semi-trailing arm.
- 1992 ABS becomes standard across all 3 Series, ASC is now available as an option.
- 1992 In February the Coupé launches — for the first time a distinct body with its own sheet metal and frameless doors, no longer a two-door derivative of the sedan.
- 1992 In October the M3 arrives with the 286 PS S50B30. In the same year BMW introduces VANOS intake camshaft adjustment — in the M3 and the six-cylinder coupés.
- 1993 In April the Convertible follows with a retractable roof and automatic rollover protection. In September the chain-driven M43 four-cylinders replace the belt-driven M40 engines.
- 1994 The Compact extends the model line downward — 22 centimetres shorter and with the E30's semi-trailing arm axle. The 318tds brings the first four-cylinder diesel in a 3 Series.
- 1995 The Touring launches in January, initially only as 320i and 328i. At the same time the M52 replaces the M50TÜ — the first six-cylinder petrol engines with an aluminium crankcase.
- 1995 In October the M3 3.2 arrives with 321 PS: the first BMW vehicle with double VANOS, the first six-speed gearbox in a 3 Series, compound brakes at the front. In September the Z3 Roadster from Spartanburg launches.
- 1998 In spring sedan production ends with the launch of the E46. Coupé, Convertible and Touring continue until 1999, the Compact until September 2000, the Z3 on E36 basis even until summer 2002.

Body variants
Sedan (E36/4)
Four-door, August 1990 to April 1998. The base of the model line, strongly focused on aerodynamics, with a significantly increased wheelbase. Integrated child seats in the rear were offered for the first time.
Coupé (E36/2)
Two-door, February 1992 to April 1999. For the first time a distinct body with its own sheet metal, a flatter roofline and frameless side windows. Only the Coupé got the M3.
Convertible (E36/2C)
April 1993 to March 1999. A full convertible without a roll bar, with a soft-top compartment lid and extendable rollover protection. The underbody and sills are reinforced.
Touring (E36/3)
January 1995 to May 1999, 105,606 units. Added late and initially only as 320i and 328i — the rarest of the large E36 body styles.
Compact (E36/5)
April 1994 to September 2000. 22 centimetres shorter, its own dashboard — and the only E36 body with the E30's semi-trailing arm rear axle instead of the central control arm axle. The reason was space for the low loading floor.
Z3 Roadster and Coupé (E36/7 · E36/8)
Strictly speaking not a body variant of the E36, but a standalone model on a shortened E36 floorpan — with the Compact's front and rear axles, meaning semi-trailing arms instead of the central control arm axle. Roadster from September 1995, Coupé from January 1998, both until summer 2002. The first BMW Group vehicle built entirely outside Germany. 310 examples of a four-door convertible sedan with a fabric top from the C-pillar and a cross-brace at the B-pillar. All engine variants were available to order.
05 · Engines
Six petrol families, two diesels
Hardly any model line covers such a broad engine range: from the belt-driven eight-valve M40 to the double VANOS six-cylinder S50B32 of the M3. Between 1990 and 2000 practically every family was replaced at least once.
M40 — 316i and 318i until 1993 verified
Eight-valve engine with an overhead camshaft, timing belt and rocker arms, without a knock sensor. The problem case of the model line: it is an interference engine with short service intervals — if the belt breaks, the engine is finished. Also camshaft and rocker arm wear if oil changes are neglected.
M43 — 316i and 318i from September 1993 verified
The M40's successor fixes exactly its weaknesses: timing chain instead of belt, roller rocker arms, knock and camshaft sensors, and with the M43TÜ a two-stage intake manifold. The plain but thoroughly solid bread-and-butter engine of the model line.
M42 and M44 — 318is and 318ti verified
The M42 was BMW's first large-scale four-valve engine with two overhead camshafts — free-revving and durable, with two known weaknesses: the profile gasket to the lower chain case and the chain guide rails, which BMW redesigned in September 1993. The M44 from 1996 has 1,895 cm³, the same 140 PS, but more torque and less friction.
M50 and M50TÜ — 320i and 325i verified
Four-valve six-cylinder with a cast-iron block, aluminium head, individual ignition coils and a timing chain — a big step up from the M20 and today the model line's reference engine. From September 1992 with VANOS on the intake side: more torque lower down, with the peak moving from 4,700 to 4,200 rpm.
M52 — 320i, 323i and 328i from 1995 verified
Successor with an aluminium crankcase and VANOS. One issue is associated with it: the Nikasil cylinder bores. In markets with high-sulphur fuel, the sulphur attacked the coating — oil consumption, rough running, and in extreme cases engine damage. With European fuel this was practically irrelevant; from the M52TÜ of 1998 onward steel liners were used anyway.
S50 — the M3's engine verified
The S50B30 produces 286 PS at 7,000/min from 2,990 cm³, with individual throttle bodies and VANOS. From late 1995 the S50B32 follows: 3,201 cm³, 321 PS at 7,400/min, double VANOS, compression ratio 11.3:1, rev limit 7,600. The 3.0-litre is considered the more durable, the 3.2-litre the stronger.
M41 and M51 — the diesels verified
Both are two-valve engines with a swirl chamber and a distributor injection pump — not four-valve direct-injection units, which only arrived with the M47 in the E46. The M51 in the 325td and 325tds is a six-cylinder with 115 and 143 PS respectively, the M41 in the 318tds was BMW's first four-cylinder diesel ever and shares around 86 percent of its components with the M51.
06 · Weak points
Reliability & weak points
- Rust is the main issue, especially in the 1990 to 1993 model years. Affected areas are the jacking points, sills, rear wheel arches above the rear valance, the exhaust bracket and the lower edge of the tailgate. The cause is inadequate cavity and seam sealing.
- Cooling system: expansion tank, thermostat housing, radiator end tanks and the plastic water pump impeller become brittle. The result is sudden coolant loss and overheating within minutes — with cylinder head damage as a consequence.
- VANOS rattling on M50TÜ, M52 and S50: worn seals cause oil pressure to drop. Metallic rattling at idle, a torque dip between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm.
- M42 before September 1993: the profile gasket between the lower chain case and cylinder head fails, coolant enters the oil under pressure. At the same time the chain guide rails were redesigned. On the M50 and S50, by contrast, the timing chain is considered unproblematic.
- M40 before September 1993: timing belt. An interference engine with short intervals — without proof, the engine should be written off in calculations.
- Mounting points of the rear subframe can crack under sustained load — especially on the Coupé, Convertible, M3 and tuned cars. Also worn thrust bearings and control arm bushings.
- Window regulators: plastic clips and gears break, the window drops into the door. Particularly annoying on the Coupé and Convertible due to the frameless windows.
- Interior: headliner comes loose, pixels fail in the instrument cluster, door panels come loose. A value issue, not a safety issue.
- On the M3, connecting rod and crankshaft bearing damage is documented. The cause is predominantly full load while the engine is still cold — BMW recommended a maximum of 4,000 rpm until 80 degrees oil temperature is reached.

1995 homologation model: 350 production cars plus a pre-series, exclusively in British Racing Green (colour code 312), 295 PS from the revised S50B30 with the short intake manifold of the later 3.2-litre. Aluminium doors, adjustable front splitter, twin rear wing. Price 91,000 DM.

2,500 four-door sedans from April to June 1994 — exactly the FIA minimum quantity to homologate the aerodynamic package for Class 2. Standard engine with 140 PS, extendable front lip, two-piece rear wing, identification code SA 777. BMW's answer to the Alfa 155 Silverstone.

09 · M & special editions
The M3 — and why the American one was a different car
The second M3 arrived in October 1992 and was the opposite of the E30 M3: not a homologated race car with wide fenders, but a fast, everyday-usable coupé. 286 PS from 2,990 cm³, individual throttle bodies, VANOS, rev limit 7,200. From October 1995 the S50B32 followed with 3,201 cm³ and 321 PS — the first BMW vehicle with double VANOS and the first 3 Series with a six-speed gearbox. A total of 71,242 M3s were built, of which 46,525 were coupés, 12,114 convertibles and 12,603 sedans.
Important for buyers: the American M3 never had the European engine. The S50B30US produced 243 PS instead of 286 and was closer in design to the standard M50 — different camshafts, different pistons, no individual throttle bodies. From 1996 it was replaced there by the S52B32US: not a displacement-equivalent S50B32, but a bored-out cast-iron M52 with 3,152 cm³, single VANOS and likewise 243 PS. The reason was pricing pressure from US dealers. With re-imports it’s worth checking the engine number and paperwork.
Besides the M3, there were special editions such as the 318is Class II and the Avus Edition, as well as conversions by Alpina. The Compact remained excluded from the M programme; its sportiest top model was the 323ti with 170 PS.

Touring car titles and the first overall diesel win in history
The E36 was the most successful touring car of its era. In 1993 Joachim Winkelhock won the British Touring Car Championship in the 318i — a four-cylinder against a field that hadn’t taken it seriously. In the German Super Touring Championship, titles followed in 1994 and 1998 through Johnny Cecotto and in 1995 again through Winkelhock. In 1997 came victory at the Bathurst 1000.
The most remarkable success, however, came with a diesel engine: at the 1998 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, a 320d won the race outright — the first overall win by a diesel at a major endurance race ever. A production model of this name never existed in the E36; the car was a pure racing construction that benefited from low fuel consumption and correspondingly fewer pit stops.
A 318i wins the British championship, a 320d the 24 Hours at the Nürburgring — with the E36, it was not the strongest cars that won.
11 · Buying guide
What matters: rust, cooling system, tuning history
The E36 is mechanically manageable and well supplied with parts. What makes it rare today is rust at structural points and thirty years of tuning. An original, dry car is worth more than any mileage figure.

Ask for evidence for the cooling system — expansion tank, thermostat housing, water pump, viscous fan clutch. Invoices younger than seven years are the best single proof of care. For the M40 up to August 1993, without a dated timing belt invoice, write off an engine in your calculations. Start it cold and listen: rattling from the front of the engine points to VANOS on the M50TÜ, M52 and S50, and to the chain guide on the early M42. On a lift, check the rear subframe mounting points for cracks and the thrust bearings for play. Operate all window regulators several times, including the short-stroke function on the Coupé. And have the tuning history verified — coilover suspension without a certificate, cut wheel arches and chip tuning cost money on resale today.
12 · The competition
What the E36 had to compete with
Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W202)
Better in terms of material quality in the early model years, long-distance comfort, and especially with diesel — the four-valve OM604 and OM605 were technically ahead of BMW's swirl-chamber engines. Worse in handling, with no rival to the M3 until the 1997 C43 AMG, and from 1996 even more rust-prone than the E36.
Audi 80 B4 and A4 B5
Better through the fully galvanised body — clearly superior to the E36 in rust resistance — plus quattro all-wheel drive, which the E36 never offered at all, and from 1995 the TDI with direct injection. Worse due to the engine sitting ahead of the front axle: understeering basic handling instead of balanced axle loads.
Alfa Romeo 155 and 156
The 156 from 1997 was a styling statement, plus Twin Spark and Busso V6 engines with character, and with the JTD the world's first common-rail diesel. Worse in build quality, electrics and resale value — and with front-wheel drive, a different concept altogether.
Volvo 850
Better in safety — the world's first side airbag in 1994 — and with a significantly larger estate loading bay than the E36 Touring, plus the punchy five-cylinder turbos. Worse due to front-wheel drive with noticeable torque steer and a less precise chassis.
Opel Vectra A and B
Better in price, space and running costs, with the Vectra A 4×4 Turbo even offering an all-wheel-drive alternative. Worse in dynamics and engine refinement, with nothing to match the six-cylinder — and today practically extinct.

Primary sources are BMW Group Classic, the BMW PressClub and Wikipedia; everything else is considered verified only once two independent sources agree. Not verifiable and therefore not mentioned here: a total production figure including the Z3, a percentage figure for torsional stiffness compared with the E30, the exact introduction date of ASC+T, and the production number of the M3 GT. Two open source conflicts: the start of Touring production (November 1994 according to the English Wikipedia, January 1995 according to the German Wikipedia) and the designation of the front axle (BMW: single-joint strut axle, Wikipedia: double-joint axle).
