01 · Overview

Buchloe beats Garching

While BMW designed the M5 as a high-revving naturally aspirated engine, Alpina took a different path: the B10 Bi-Turbo uses two Garrett T25 turbochargers to extract 360 PS and 520 Nm from the 3.4-litre M30 — at its introduction in 1989, the fastest production sedan in the world, with a top speed of over 290 km/h.

507 units were built until 1994, each with a Getrag five-speed gearbox and Alpina suspension. At 146,800 DM, the price was almost double that of the M5 — yet the Bi-Turbo still became the best-selling individual model in Alpina’s history up to that point. As an independent manufacturer, Alpina nonetheless belongs in the E34 chapter: without the 5 Series, there would be no B10.
