From the BMW Turbo and the E21 through the analogue cockpit era to iDrive: idea, authorship, impact and spread across the E model lines

Central thesisThe E21 did not invent driver orientation out of nowhere. It made an idea anticipated by the BMW Turbo of 1972 visible for the first time in a BMW production model in 1975 – and turned ergonomics into a brand promise.

A dashboard becomes a stance

No other classic interior feature reveals BMW’s self-image as directly as the driver-oriented cockpit. The centre console and the vertically stacked controls are not placed neutrally in the space, but are visibly angled toward the driver’s seat. Displays sit within direct view, frequently used switches move closer to the right hand. What began as an ergonomic decision becomes a message: in this car, the driver is not merely an occupant, but the reference point of the design.347

BMW Group Classic describes the E21 of 1975 as the first BMW production model in which the cockpit grouped in an arc around the driver. The later official account specifies the function further: the vertically arranged controls of the centre console were clearly angled toward the driver and thus easier to reach and read.34

Clarifying the termDriver orientation does not mean fitting the entire dashboard at an angle. What is meant is a hierarchy consisting of instruments within the field of view, a centre console angled toward the driver, short reach distances and a design language that visually gathers the driver’s position together.

The prehistory: BMW Turbo, 1972

The idea appeared before the E21. The BMW Turbo of 1972 was the brand’s first concept vehicle and was conceived as a safety sports car. BMW describes it as a study that placed the occupant at the centre. Of its safety ideas, the driver-oriented cockpit is said to have been the first to be carried over into a production vehicle. This places the conceptual source of the E21 cockpit two years before the completion of series development.1

Paul Bracq was BMW’s chief designer at the time. According to BMW, he was given the brief for the Turbo in 1971; the new design line of the E21 was also created under his design responsibility. The path from the Turbo to the E21 therefore clearly runs through the design phase led by Bracq.25

However, anyone claiming that Bracq personally and solely invented the dashboard turned toward the driver goes beyond the evidence. The BMW sources name him as chief designer of the Turbo and of the new E21 design line, but do not attribute the specific cockpit idea to any single individual. The sound formulation is therefore: a BMW development from the Bracq era, not a confirmed individual invention.

The BMW Turbo was the laboratory, the E21 the production premiere. Paul Bracq shaped the design framework; the individual authorship of the cockpit principle remains open in the accessible official sources.

What changed functionally?

The immediate benefit was initially analogue and tangible. The driver was meant to grasp relevant information more quickly and operate central functions with fewer glances and reaching movements. BMW later summarises this logic in its design DNA as follows: controls on the instrument panel and centre console are angled toward the driver for good visibility and are within direct reach; displays lie within direct view.78

A published series of E21 measurements giving seconds of gaze diversion or millimetres of reach saved is not available. What can be documented is the objective described by BMW; a quantified ergonomic advantage over every competitor, on the other hand, would not be credible.

From detail to core brand trait

The cockpit worked on two levels. Functionally, it arranged information and switches around the driver. Emotionally, it carried the claim of engine, chassis and rear-wheel drive into the interior. The BMW already looked active while standing still. This made the often abstract notion of driving pleasure visible and tangible.

BMW later explicitly declared systematic driver orientation a hallmark of its interior design. The asymmetric centre console and its model-dependent variations were meant to convey ergonomics, premium quality and individual character at the same time. The interior thus continued what the body promised.78

The kidney grille and twin headlights made a BMW recognisable from the outside. The cockpit turned toward the driver fulfilled the same task on the inside: it showed whom the car was meant to serve and what the brand wanted to stand for.

Did BMW win new buyer groups with this?

An isolated buyer study attributing the E21’s success percentage-wise to the cockpit design is not publicly available. A complete demographic breakdown by age, occupation or first-time-buyer status is also missing. The connection must therefore be assessed indirectly.

What can be documented is the market opening achieved by the overall package: the first 3 Series brought sporty driving into the mid-range class and showed that driving pleasure did not have to be reserved for the larger model lines. From the 316 to the 320i, the range extended from a comparatively accessible entry point to a sporty flagship model. The interior gave all variants the same driver-related identity.46

The economic effect of the overall product was extraordinary. In 1981 the E21 passed the one-million mark; by 1983, 1,364,039 vehicles had been sold. It surpassed the 02 after only six years and became the most successful BMW model of its time. In a survey from 1980 cited by BMW, 80 percent of 3 Series drivers said there was nothing they could improve about their car.46

This proves broad acceptance, but not the sole effect of the dashboard. Editorially, it can be stated: the cockpit was a strong recognition and bonding element within a successful product concept. It helped even new BMW customers immediately understand how the brand wanted to differ from a conventional sedan.

The dashboard alone did not win new buyers. What was decisive was the combination of compact size, engine range, chassis, premium aspiration and a cockpit that constantly staged this sportiness in everyday use.

The analogue spread across the E model lines

After the E21, the idea did not remain confined to the 3 Series. In the late seventies and eighties, the visible tilt of the centre console migrated into the coupé, the upper class and the upper mid-range. Official BMW cockpit photographs document the feature, for instance, in the E24 and E30; in the E23, E28, E32, E34 and E31 the principle was continued depending on the model. The tilt was often more emphatic in the sporty coupé, and calmer, integrated into a wide instrument panel, in the luxury sedan.10111213

The table classifies model line families and their core models, not every internal sub-variant or market code. In body derivatives of a family – such as Sedan, Touring, Coupé or Convertible – the basic cockpit architecture typically remained shared.

The E model lines at a glance

For the question “Which E model lines had it?” a yes-no list is too crude. From 2001 onward, a BMW could be strongly driver-focused in functional terms even though the dashboard was visually turned less noticeably. The overview therefore distinguishes between visible physical tilt and digital or functional driver orientation.

Not included are pure development, racing or prototype codes. The E26 BMW M1 and the E52 Z8 do have driving-related control areas, but do not consistently follow the archetypal centre console derived from the E21. It is precisely these exceptions that show: at BMW, driver orientation is a principle, not a rigid template.

Strongly angled, integrated or digitally reduced are not quality tiers. They describe how visibly driver orientation was designed. The functional idea could persist even though the centre console appeared visually more symmetrical.

1990s: from add-on to overall architecture

The E36, E38, E39 and E46 turned the strongly legible rotation of the early years into a more fluid interior architecture. Ventilation, radio, climate control and centre console formed more integrated surfaces. The driver’s position remained prioritised, but the passenger was excluded less demonstratively. In this way BMW adapted the principle to growing demands for comfort, space and quality.613

2001: iDrive changes direction

With the E65 of the 7 Series, a second revolution began in 2001. BMW iDrive significantly reduced the number of switches and bundled numerous functions into the Control Display and the rotary push controller. BMW does not cite a specific figure here; the model line designation E65 comes from the model system, not from the cited source. Driver orientation could no longer be read merely from the tilt of plastic surfaces, but from information hierarchy, operating path and context.14

This was not the end of the E21 idea, but its abstraction. Where every switch once physically pointed toward the driver, now the display and controller were meant to order attention. Later E model lines such as E60, E63, E70 or E90 combined this digital operating idea with physical tilt of varying intensity.

E21 meant: turn switches toward the driver. E65 meant: organise functions around the driver. The visible form became calmer, the claim remained in place.

From switch to attention management

With growing digitalisation, the task of the cockpit shifted. The BMW Operating System 7.0 of 2018 was meant to present information appropriately to the situation and guide the driver’s attention. Instrument Display and Control Display worked more closely together; voice, gestures and personalisation supplemented buttons and controllers.15

BMW Panoramic Vision later explicitly extended this line of tradition: relevant information should appear in the right place and at the right time – guided by the principle “eyes on the road, hands on the wheel”. For the Neue Klasse, this became Panoramic iDrive. This already lies beyond E-coding, but shows where the E21 idea has led.1617

What changed in brand perception?

Before the E21, BMW was already perceived as a sporty brand. The driver-oriented dashboard therefore did not create this reputation. However, it gave it a repeatable interior form. Whoever got in recognised the priority of driving even before the engine started. Performance figures and driving behaviour became a daily usage experience.

Four changes were decisive for perception. First, sportiness no longer worked only through engine and chassis, but through operation. Second, the same idea could be transferred from the compact 3 Series to the luxury sedan. Third, premium quality became legible as considered ergonomics. Fourth, an interior feature emerged that could be recognised across model changes.78

The later brand success fits this positioning: the E21 became a million-seller in 1981, the E30 expanded the range with a four-door, convertible, Touring and M3, the E36 opened up an additional segment with the Compact, and the first 1 Series carried driver orientation and rear-wheel drive into the premium compact class. For the 1 Series, BMW explicitly names additional target groups and a driver-oriented cockpit layout as part of the brand’s typical characteristics.618

Caution regarding causality remains necessary. Sales figures document the success of the vehicles, not the isolated contribution of a dashboard. The strongest defensible statement is therefore: the cockpit became a consistent symbol that made the sporty core of the brand more understandable, more recognisable and adaptable across new vehicle classes.

PERCEPTION CONCLUSIONBMW did not become a driver’s brand because of an angled dashboard. But the cockpit made the driver’s brand visible inside the car – across decades, classes and technical shifts.

Conclusion: an idea allowed to change its form

The achievement of the E21 does not lie solely in the angled centre console. BMW turned it into an adaptable principle: anticipated in 1972 in the Turbo, brought into production in 1975 in the E21, expressed in the eighties as a visible cocoon, in the nineties as an integrated surface, and from 2001 with iDrive as an architecture of information and operation. In this way, driver orientation was preserved as a priority of relevant information, good reach and clear driver focus.

Closing sentenceThe E21 did not just turn the centre console. It turned the perspective: the interior was conceived from the person driving the BMW.
