01 · Overview
The homologation ancestor
The “L” did not stand for luxury, but for lightweight: thinner body panels, doors, bonnet and boot lid in aluminium, Perspex side windows, deleted sound insulation — all to homologate the large coupé for Group 2 of the touring car European Championship. Fifteen years later, exactly the same logic produced the M3 E30.
Three stages: first the carburettor engine from the 3.0 CS, from August 1972 the fuel-injected version with 3,003 cm³ (the crucial cubic centimetres above the three-litre class limit), and finally from 1973 3,153 cm³ with 206 PS — accompanied by the famous aerodynamics package that earned the car the name “Batmobile”.
The punchline of the registration story is documented verbatim: the large rear wing was not permitted on German roads — BMW did not fit it, but instead put it in the customer’s boot.
02 · History
From regulation to legend
- 1971 Start of CSL production with the carburettor engine from the 3.0 CS — the lightweight package is the real point.
- 1972 From August, 3,003 cm³ with fuel injection — just above the three-litre limit, for homologation in the class over three litres.
- 1973 3,153 cm³, 206 PS and the aero package: front splitter, wing fins, roof spoiler, rear wing — the "Batmobile" has arrived. Hezemans takes the ETCC title.
- 1975 End of production — on the racetrack, the CSL wins the touring car European Championship every year until 1979.

Coupé, lightweight construction
Identifying features: aluminium body panels, Perspex windows, and with the aero package, fins on the wings and a roof spoiler. The rear wing was supplied in the boot from the factory — for road registration.
