01 · Overview

Same displacement, a different name

With the model revision in autumn 2000, BMW swapped out the six-cylinders in the E39 — and renamed them in the process. The 523i disappeared, the 525i arrived. Displacement stayed the same: 2,494 cm³ in both cases. What changed was the engine. Instead of the M52TÜB25, the 525i runs the M54B25 with double VANOS and a fully electronic throttle, producing 192 PS instead of 170 PS. BMW installed the same engine at the same time in the E46 as the 325i.

In the Touring, this is the engine variant that suits the car best. Above the 525i sits the 530i with 231 PS, below it the 520i, which despite its name has 2.2 litres — the model designations of the E39 are their own matter at this point. The 525i sits in between, and in such a way that it moves a loaded Touring without effort, without demanding the running costs of a V8.

It is thus the E39 Touring for everyday use: six-cylinder with aluminium suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a separately opening rear window — and without the bills that the 540i brings with it. Anyone seeking torque and range instead will find it in the 530d.

02 · History

Einordnung

  1. 2000 Model revision in September. The M54 replaces the M52TÜ, the 523i becomes the 525i: 192 instead of 170 PS at an unchanged 2,494 cm³. Along with this, light-guide parking light rings, round fog lights as standard, and light bars in the rear lights.
  2. 2003 The Sedan is phased out; BMW Group Classic states 05/2003 as the production end for the 525i. The E60 is presented in July.
  3. 2004 The Touring runs on as the last E39. Group Classic states 02/2004 for the 525i touring, widely used databases 05/2004 — the contradiction is not resolved.

03 · Model overview

520i, 523i, 525i, 530i — the six-cylinders side by side

The jump from the 523i to the 525i is an engine change, not a displacement change. Production periods for the Sedan; the Touring in every case ran a few months longer.

Start of production in November 1996, market launch in March 1997 — the 525i was available in this body from autumn 2000. Identifying features are the L-shaped rear lights and the separately opening rear window. BMW never built an M5 Touring on the E39; that returned only with the E61.

05 · Engines

M54B25 verified

The last major naturally aspirated inline-six before the Valvetronic generation: aluminium head, double VANOS on intake and exhaust, fully electronic throttle and the variable intake system DISA. The same engine runs in the E46 as the 325i. It is considered durable — the known weak points sit in the periphery, not in the base engine.

06 · Weak points

Zuverlässigkeit & Schwachstellen

  • Crankcase ventilation with oil separator: hoses become porous, the valve can clog. The result is false air, a rough idle and oil consumption. On the M54 a wear part, not a defect.
  • The variable intake system DISA announces itself with hesitation under acceleration, loss of power and a hissing sound after the engine is switched off.
  • Camshaft and crankshaft sensors fail. This shows up as fluctuating engine speed, up to the engine stalling while driving.
  • From around 150,000 kilometres, timing chain tensioners and guide rails rattle.
  • The cooling system ages by time, not by mileage: radiator, thermostat housing, expansion tank, water pump. A failure ends at an overheated aluminium head. Have the age of the parts documented, not just the condition checked.
  • Suspension bushings from around 150,000 kilometres: control arms, control links, tie rods, rear rubber mounts. A set of control arms runs at around 1,000 euros.
  • On the Touring, the tailgate is added, and — if fitted — the air springs and compressor of the self-levelling suspension.

09 · Buying guide

Buying advice in brief

The 525i is the E39 you can buy without having to plan a second budget for upkeep. The M54 is considered durable. It’s rarely the engine that gets expensive — it’s everything that carries water, and the suspension.

Rear wheel arches from inside and outside, including the seams

Touring tailgate, especially around the window frame and handle strip

Sills and jack points — the latter can break when lifting

Front wings and door sills

Order: first the body on the lift, then the documentation — cooling system, and for the Steptronic the transmission oil change — then the test drive cold and warm, finally suspension and steering. Six-figure mileages are the norm for the M54 and no reason to rule out a car: a 525i with 220,000 kilometres and a complete history is the better choice than one with 120,000 and a service record full of gaps. Pixel defects in the speedometer and onboard display are a price argument, not a disqualifying factor.

10 · The competition

The competition

Mercedes-Benz E-Class T-Model (S210)

The direct rival, built from 1996 to 2003. Corrosion protection is the clear weak point of these years — a point where the E39 still fares better today.

Audi A6 Avant (C5)

From 1998, longitudinal engine with front- or all-wheel drive. The counter-design to rear-wheel drive, and at the time the more modern car on the inside.

What remains open: for the Touring's production end, BMW Group Classic states 02/2004, widely used databases 05/2004. For acceleration, 8.5 and 8.8 seconds stand side by side, with no factory figure to resolve it. Whether the self-levelling suspension was special equipment on the 525i Touring could only be documented via price list excerpts in driver forums — we therefore list it as unconfirmed.
