The quiet V8
The 540i brought the 4.4-litre V8 M62 to the E39: 286 PS, 420 Nm — from 1998 as the M62TU with VANOS and 440 Nm. With the six-speed manual it was the model line’s secret sports car, with the Steptronic the cruiser.
Built as a Sedan and Touring, it is today the most affordable way to experience V8 driving in a classic BMW — with known, manageable weaknesses.
