01 · Overview

The diesel comes of age

The 530d debuted in autumn 1998 with the M57 — BMW’s first six-cylinder diesel with common-rail. 184 PS and 390 Nm turned the diesel 5 Series into a genuinely composed touring car for the first time, without the typical diesel clatter; from 2000 output rose to 193 PS.

As Sedan and Touring, the 530d became a favourite among high-mileage drivers — and the M57 the engine that established the reputation of BMW’s diesels.
