In 1972, BMW showed with a gullwing-door car just 1.10 metres tall that high passive safety, dynamic handling and spectacular design need not be a contradiction. Paul Bracq’s study remained a two-piece experiment – but it shaped the cockpit, the turbo image and the design language of coming BMW models.

A sports car as a counter-proposal
The BMW Turbo was not a pre-series model but a rolling argument: safety was not meant to be visible through bulky add-ons, but engineered into a light, well-arranged and agile car.
When Paul Bracq received the commission for the study in 1971, BMW was in a phase of demonstrative departure. The economic crises of the post-war decades had been overcome, the brand’s sporting reputation had grown, the new group headquarters and the BMW Museum were being built in Munich, and the 1972 Olympic Games turned the home city into an international showcase. The Turbo fit this climate: it was not meant to generate sales volume, but to show the design and technical confidence BMW now claimed for itself.38
Bracq, at the time BMW’s chief designer, was able to work more freely than on a series model line. The brief did not call for an everyday four-seater or cost-efficient production. The result was a pure two-seater with a transversely mounted mid-engine, an extremely low wedge shape, large gullwing doors, pop-up headlights and partly enclosed rear wheels. The flat kidney grille preserved the brand identity; the two BMW emblems on the rear were new.13
The term “Turbo” was more than a power label here. The turbocharged two-litre four-cylinder combined high specific output with a compact design – ideal for the short mid-engine layout. At the same time, the name became a confident statement: BMW wanted to claim forced induction as a future technology, a year before the 2002 turbo appeared in Septemberundefinedat the IAA — according to BMW with the first exhaust turbocharger in a European production car.16
Safety without “armour bumpers”
In the early 1970s, the safety debate intensified, especially under the influence of American bumper and crash regulations. Many test vehicles looked heavy and additive: massive bumpers, visible roll-over structures, protective parts fitted on afterwards. BMW instead relied on integration. The study combined large glass areas and good all-round visibility with a striking orange-red safety livery, a stable roof and door-post structure, and energy-absorbing zones at the front and rear.123
The deformable, foamed plastic elements were particularly illustrative. BMW describes them as parts “that did not tear and sprang back into their original shape after minor knocks”. For stronger collisions, the crash structures worked with hydraulic dampers. In addition there were automatic seatbelts, a special steering-wheel impact guard, a collapsible steering column with three universal joints, and substantial rollover protection.13
The operating logic was also part of the safety concept. The car could only be started once the seatbelt was fastened. ABS was meant to preserve steerability during emergency braking; a radar-based system monitored the distance, or the available braking distance, to traffic ahead and gave an acoustic warning. There was also a lateral acceleration display – spectacular, but also an expression of the ambition to give the driver more information.12

Conceived from the human being outward

The most important transfer into series production was, initially, neither the engine nor a single sensor, but the architecture of the interior. Bracq described the car as an “intimate cell” meant to fit the human being like a second skin. Consequently, the centre console was angled towards the driver. All important controls were meant to remain within reach with the seatbelt fastened, without the driver having to lean forward.1
According to BMW, this driver-oriented cockpit went into series production in 1975 in the first 3 Series, the E21, and became a brand hallmark across generations. The logic matters more than the shape: short sightlines, switches arranged close to the body, and a clear prioritisation of the driver. The Turbo thus made ergonomics not a comfort extra, but a component of active safety.12

Premieres, tour and two vehicles built
The reliably documented public premiere took place in October 1972 at the Paris Motor Show. There, the study was received with enthusiasm. At the IAA in Frankfurt in 1973, it again drew great attention. Because international exhibitions requested the car, BMW had a second example built, differing in details. The correct number built is therefore two – not one, although the Turbo is often described as a “one-off”.110
The 1972 Munich Olympic Games are significant to the origin story: they offered BMW and the new group headquarters a global stage. However, official BMW history places the presentation of the Turbo in Paris and later in Frankfurt. The often-repeated claim that the Turbo led the athletes’ entrance stems from secondary sources and is not as well substantiated. There is a risk of confusion with the electric BMW 1602s, which were indeed used as escort vehicles at the Games.13
After the exhibition tour, the Turbo remained a test vehicle. Engineers from various disciplines continued to work with it; the bodywork was optimised in the wind tunnel in particular. Today, one example is in the BMW Museum in Munich, the other at the BMW Zentrum in South Carolina. Both have always remained company property.1
What actually reached series production
The Turbo was not industrialised as a package. Its influence broke down into several development lines – some immediate, others only years later.

The M1: a legacy, not a series version
The Turbo lives on most visibly in the BMW M1. The mid-engine sports car introduced in 1978 adopted the basic idea of the extremely flat wedge shape, the low front with pop-up headlights, the wide rear-end effect and the two BMW emblems. But the M1 was not a series version of the E25. Its body was drawn by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign; beneath it sat a tubular space frame and a longitudinally mounted 3.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine. Put precisely: the Turbo was a conceptual and design precursor, not a technical blueprint.45
The line even extends beyond the M1. BMW deliberately revisited it in 2008 with the M1 Homage. There, the design department explicitly linked Bracq’s Turbo and Giugiaro’s M1 into a dual historical reference. Claims that the Z1 or the 8 Series are also direct derivatives are plausible as a stylistic reading, but are less clearly documented by BMW than the M1 connection and should therefore not be placed on the same evidentiary level.5
Voices from the trade press
Since only two prototypes were built, classic road tests are rare. The trade press evaluates the Turbo mainly as design and technology history – and strikingly unanimously as an exceptional design.

Significance for BMW and future model lines
The BMW Turbo marks a strategic shift on three levels. First, it established the concept car at BMW as a public development tool: from then on, a study was not meant to be merely an attractive shape, but to test brand positioning, ergonomics, aerodynamics and new assistance functions at the same time. BMW itself describes the E25 in retrospect as its first concept car.2
Second, it linked sportiness with responsibility. The message was unusual for 1972: a fast car did not need to demonstrate safety through mass or a visually rugged appearance. Visibility, usability, controllable braking, early warning and structural energy absorption belonged together. This exact combination – dynamic handling plus controllability – later became a core part of BMW’s self-image.12
Third, the Turbo gave the brand’s young high-performance identity a face. BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded in the same year; six years later, the M1 stood as a genuine mid-engine BMW on the road and in racing. The E25 was not the M1’s development vehicle in the strict sense, but it supplied the visual and conceptual vocabulary: a compact cell, a flat wedge shape, technical clarity and an unmistakable BMW graphic.14
Its most lasting achievement therefore does not lie in a single patent. The Turbo showed how BMW wanted to communicate innovation: driver-focused, technically plausible and emotionally charged. What looked like science fiction in 1972 – ABS, distance warning, integrated crash structures, highly specific turbo output – gradually became normal in the years that followed. The gullwing doors remained a dream; the mindset went into series production.17
