Where the M Sedan begins
In 1980, the young Motorsport GmbH fitted its badge to a production sedan for the first time: the M535i received the 3.5-litre M90 with 218 PS, closer gear ratios, a limited-slip differential, Recaro seats and understated spoilers — the recipe that would mature into the M5 five years later.
1,650 units were built, 240 of them as CKD kits for South Africa. Anyone tracing the lineage of M sedans inevitably ends up here — and at the South African predecessor, the 530 MLE of 1976 (218 units), which Motorsport GmbH co-developed.

Buying Advice in Brief
Check authenticity via VIN and M equipment — E12 rust is merciless (wheel arches, sills, spring mounts). Good cars are collector’s items.
