BMW M3 Evolution 1987

Stückzahl

505 — unconfirmed

The figure appears in no BMW source. It is ubiquitous, but stems from register and enthusiast sources.

Motor

200 PS at 6,750/min

2,302 cc, 230 km/h. With optional power upgrade kit up to 220 PS.

Name

not an "Evolution I"

BMW calls the car "M3 with Evolution engine". The enthusiast name Evo 1 only emerged once an Evolution II existed.

01 · Überblick

A regulatory process on wheels

There is no brochure for this car, no price list, no press release. BMW never advertised it, and the company’s own press kit on the history of M3 special editions doesn’t even mention it. The only BMW source that lists it is BMW Group Classic — under the unwieldy name “M3 with Evolution engine”.

The reason for its existence lies in the regulations. Group A required 5,000 identical vehicles within twelve months — for an Evolution variant, 500 subsequently sufficed. In spring 1987, BMW therefore built a small series with a revised engine: 200 PS instead of 195, achieved through detail work on the S14. The FIA homologation extension 4/1ET took effect on 2 May 1987. According to dealer sources, the cars themselves were distributed inconspicuously among the regular M3s.

This is precisely why the model is so difficult to identify today: no badge, no distinct paint finish, no add-on parts. The Evolution engine can only be identified by a stamped “E” on the cylinder head, the two-piece tubular exhaust manifold, and a white dot on the throttle body spacer plate. And take note: heads and manifolds are interchangeable parts — the “E” proves an Evolution head, not an Evolution car.

02 · Historie

Four months in spring 1987

  1. 1987 February to May: construction of the small series with Evolution engine. BMW Group Classic states no production figure; the circulating 505 comes from register sources.
  2. 1987 On 2 May, the FIA homologation extension 4/1ET took effect — it concerns bodywork and engine. Whether the homologated body parts were fitted to the road cars remains unclear.
  3. 1988 With the Evolution II, the 1987 stage retroactively receives its enthusiast name "Evo 1" — it does not originate from BMW.

No visual changes compared to the series M3 — that is the actual distinguishing feature of this special edition.

The engine

BMW Group Classic describes the changes as purely technical — externally, the car remained a normal M3. 200 PS at 6,750 rpm, 230 km/h, optionally a power upgrade kit up to 220 PS. What is otherwise said in enthusiast circles about revised camshafts, higher compression, or thinner glass belongs to the 1988 Evolution II, not here.

The car’s purpose was motorsport — the Evolution stage was homologated for Group A on 2 May 1987. The M3’s racing successes are covered on the model line’s main page.

What to look out for when buying

A 1987 M3 offered as an Evolution model remains an ordinary M3 until the production data proves otherwise.

Request a vehicle enquiry from BMW Group Classic and check the production date against the February to May 1987 window. The head E and manifold alone only prove the parts, not the car.
