The blueprint for the sporting 3 Series
With the 323i, the first 3 Series gained its flagship in 1977: the new M20 six-cylinder with 2.3 litres, K-Jetronic fuel injection and 143 PS — plus, as the only model in the line, disc brakes all round. Identifiable by the six-cylinder’s twin headlights and the two tailpipes on the left.
The 323i defined the formula that later made the 325i and 328i great: compact body, free-revving six-cylinder, rear-wheel drive. It’s no coincidence that it is today the most sought-after production E21.
