01 · Überblick
The solid summit
The 735i was the naturally aspirated flagship of the first 7 Series throughout its entire production run: initially with the M90 (218 PS at 5,200/min), and from 1982 with the M30B34 at the same output, now at 5,800/min. For the US market, a catalytic converter version with 185 PS was offered, later also as the luxury derivative L7.
Only the turbocharged 745i stood above it — the 735i remained the car for those who considered twelve cylinders unnecessary and 218 PS sufficient. Rightly so.
