Forced induction instead of displacement
Instead of a V12, in 1980 BMW opted for a turbocharger at the top of the E23: the 745i extracted 252 PS from the 3.2-litre M102 — the name alluded to the calculated displacement equivalent (3.2 litres × turbo factor 1.4 ≈ 4.5). From 1983, the 3.4-litre M106 took over with the same output but more torque at lower engine speeds.
The turbo 7 Series remained a niche model for connoisseurs — with a typical turbo lag, but confident thrust. Today it is a sought-after rarity of the early turbocharging era.
