Twelve Cylinders as a Challenge
With the 750i, BMW led the way in 1987: the M70 V12 with 5.0 litres and 300 PS — the first twelve-cylinder engine in a German production car since the war, two years before Mercedes could respond. Two separate engine control units, electronic throttle, electronically limited to 250 km/h: the car defined what a flagship had to be capable of.
As the 750i and long-wheelbase 750iL, it became the car of chancellors and corporate leaders — today it is a technically fascinating collector’s item with correspondingly demanding maintenance requirements.
