Eight cylinders for everyday use
With the M60B40, a V8 entered the 5 Series for the first time in 1992: 286 PS, 400 Nm, available with six-speed manual transmission — as Sedan and Touring. The 540i closed the gap between the 535i and M5 and became the model line’s assured long-distance cruiser.
Early M60 units carry the well-known Nikasil issue in their history — affected engines were replaced by BMW at the time; today this chapter is practically closed.
