01 · Überblick
The benchmark
The 740i was the heart of the E38 range: initially with the M60B40 (4.0 l), from 1996 with the M62B44 (4.4 l), and from 1998 as the M62TU with VANOS — always 286 PS, optionally as the long-wheelbase 740iL. The combination of five-speed Steptronic, classic proportions, and understated electronics is considered by many to be the last analogue 7 Series.
As a movie car (Tomorrow Never Dies, The Transporter), the E38 also became a style icon.
