Lightweight Construction as a Program
CSL stands for Coupé Sport Leichtbau, and the name reflects the concept: 1,385 kilograms, 110 less than the standard M3. The roof is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and saves seven kilograms at the highest point of the car alone. In addition, there are body panels made of carbon, thinner glass for the rear window, a boot floor made of lightweight fiber board, and the omission of most of the sound insulation, the electric seats, and the navigation system. The air conditioning and radio were also removed — those who wanted them could get both back as a no-cost option.
In the CSL, the S54 produces 360 PS, 17 more than in the standard M3. The gain comes from sharper camshafts, a larger intake tract with a carbon intake manifold, a revised exhaust manifold, and slightly modified exhaust valves. Shifting is done exclusively via the sequential SMG II, with shift times shortened to 80 milliseconds.
Perhaps the most remarkable detail: BMW fitted the CSL as standard with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires — semi-slicks that only work at operating temperature. A warning label for cold and wet conditions was stuck inside the car. And anyone who presented a valid motorsport license could order the CSL from the factory without a top speed limiter.

Two Years, Two Colors
- 2002 BMW M shows a CSL prototype with the V8 from the M5 and Z8, reduced to 3,999 cm³ and producing 430 PS. It does not go into production — the CSL keeps the inline six.
- 2003 Start of production. There are exactly two colors: Silver Grey Metallic and Sapphire Black Metallic. Sources differ on whether production ended in December 2003 or continued into 2004.
- 2004 In the E46 price list, the CSL tops the range at 85,000 euros — the cheapest E46, the Compact, cost 21,500 euros.

The Engine
S54B32 · 3.246 cm³ · 360 PS geprüft
The CSL version of the S54 gains its extra power not from displacement or revs, but from breathing: sharper camshaft profiles, a larger intake tract with a carbon-fiber intake manifold, a refined exhaust manifold, and slightly modified exhaust valves. The intake sound of this carbon airbox is still considered one of the most distinctive ever heard in a production BMW. Shifting is exclusively sequential.

The CSL itself had no factory racing program — it is the road car that most consistently embodies the track-focused idea. On the Nürburgring Nordschleife, it ranked among the fastest production vehicles of its time in 2003.
