Homologation, round two
For the 2001 American Le Mans Series, BMW fitted the newly developed P60 V8 into the M3 — and won immediately. Because the regulations required a road car with the same engine concept, the GTR road version was created: four litres, 380 PS according to the factory, six-speed gearbox, 1,350 kg.
The price of around 250,000 Euro and the end of the V8 rule loophole turned the car into a phantom: of the ten examples announced, only a few are considered fully built — reliably documented are three show-ready vehicles. This makes the GTR the rarest road model in M3 history.

A short, loud chapter
- 2001 The M3 GTR wins the GT class of the American Le Mans Series; Porsche protests against the V8.
- 2002 From 2002, the regulations require at least 100 cars and 1,000 engines per concept — BMW withdraws the GTR.
- 2004 Comeback at the Nürburgring Nordschleife: two overall 24h wins in 2004 and 2005 with the GTR.
