01 · Überblick
The Reference
The third M5 received a V8 for the first time: the S62 produces 400 PS at 6,600 rpm from 4.9 litres, with individual throttle bodies and double VANOS. It was available exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox — no automatic, no SMG.
Externally it remained understated: four tailpipes, unique bumpers, 18-inch wheels. It was built only as a Sedan in Dingolfing, alongside the regular production line — no more hand-built assembly as with the E34. Today the E39 M5 is regarded as the pinnacle of the analogue M Sedans.
