The most famous harebrained idea in company history
The origin is charmingly documented: two BMW executives — chief engineer Alex von Falkenhausen and head of planning Helmut Werner Bönsch — independently had the two-litre M10 fitted into their private 1600-2s. When they found out, they submitted a joint proposal to the board; at the same time, US importer Max Hoffman was pushing for a sportier version. The result: the 2002.
100 PS in a lightweight two-door hit the nerve of the time — 339,092 units were built by 1975, plus the ti (120 PS), tii, Touring and turbo. The 2002 firmly established BMW as a brand of sporting sedans and is the direct ancestor of the 3 Series.
